ReachSci Society of Cambridge University launched the mini-PhD programme in an effort to remove research barriers for students interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) research. This year’s research topic is tackling sensors, such as the investigation of bacterial load in water or the study of the accuracy of personal glucometers. The programme will be launched in Ethiopia at Bahir Dar University.
A PhD degree is the highest academic degree that a person can attain; it requires a minimum of three-year enrolment. Its key component is conducting contemporary research, writing theses, and presenting its findings at the end of the academic years. Accordingly, ReachSci provides this unique opportunity for students to experience what a PhD is like through training and research projects that will enable them to learn all the main skills and tools needed to make the most out of a PhD degree. The students also learn soft skills along with hard skills, such as teamwork, communication, and establishing relationships with other aspiring students around the world. The training is run online, and it includes a practical research project that students will perform under the supervision of a professor from their university. ReachSci provides an outstanding experience to students by helping them build self-confidence while doing research and distinguish themselves by participating in the mini-PhD programme. At the end of the programme, the students will present their findings at the International ReachSci conference and will be awarded a certificate of achievement.
ReachSci society believes that a PhD is the hallmark of all academic degrees and the aspiration of every academic. ReachSci aspires to equip students from anywhere with the skills to achieve this goal. The mini-PhD programme shall pave the way for students to carry out outstanding scientific research that will help them in their academic career and enhance their chances of pursuing a PhD at a world-renowned university.
